I have a neighbor who asks every time she sees me, “You are so thin. What’s your secret?” Every single time, I reply that I simply try to eat healthy food, I eat when I’m hungry, stop eating when I’m full, and I exercise.
But maybe I do have a secret. Oops.
Let me preface this by saying that I’ve always been slim. I used to eat lots of junk but balanced it out by exercising a lot. Now that I’m older, I don’t exercise nearly as much as I used to, for a variety of reasons. So how have I stayed thin?
Almost every morning I make a veggie and fruit smoothie using the following ingredients:
- brussels sprouts
- frozen mixed berries
- whey protein powder
Those are the basics. Every week I’ll add something different, like cantaloupe, mango, cranberries, cucumber, grapes, pear, pea shoots, green beans, etc. Add 1.5 cups of water, blend in a Vitamix blender, and breakfast is ready.
To give credit where credit is due, this whole idea came from Jef’s mom, as did the Vitamix blender. If it weren’t for her, I’d be wearing pants three sizes larger.
In addition to the smoothie, I try to drink water instead of sugary drinks throughout the day. Hot water is my favorite beverage (weird, I know). For the rest of the day I pretty much eat whatever I want. That said, I limit my simple carb intake because lots of simple carbs make me feel shaky, and deep fried foods often make me nauseated.
I’m a believer that a strong mind-body connection is essential to maintaining one’s health, so I listen to my body. If I’m hungry, I eat. If I’m thirsty I drink water. If I want a cookie, I eat a cookie, but I don’t overindulge.
There you have it. I highly doubt that all this counts as a “secret” for being thin, but for those who aren’t knowledgable about healthy food, maybe it is somewhat of a secret. Anyway, the secret’s out.
