It’s a bit early to call it, but I’m pretty sure my bed design is solid. Even better, I’m pretty sure I know how to build it, and I don’t think I’ll have to buy or borrow any tools to get it done. I’m starting to get excited.
The bed platform will sit over the cab, and it will hold a full size bed (75″ L x 55″ W). The head portion can be propped up for reading. The foot portion can be folded out of the way during the day. A horizontal bar at the foot of the bed will both keep the mattress in place and act as a handhold. The entire frame can be propped up as necessary to accommodate parking on a slight slope. It may work, it may not. Anyhow, this is the vision.
While I’m excited to start building the bed platform, I’m even more excited about what completing the bed platform will represent. By the time the bed platform is done, I hopefully will have also finished insulating the interior, and laid down a subfloor. This means that Jef and I will be able to throw a couple of camping pads inside, grab some clothes, food, water, Sake, and take off anywhere for a few days. We’ll finally get to see what sleeping in a van is like… it’d probably be good to make sure we like it before we, um, commit to the idea. Eh, details.
We’ll finally be able see what freedom tastes like. True freedom won’t come until the condo is rented, but for now even a tiny morsel will make me happy.
