Today was a déjá vu day. Jef and I had to do something about the shredded tire in the trunk so we took Gypsy to America’s Tire for two more new tires, and then to B & I Frame to check the front alignment.
It’s impossible to pinpoint what the cause of yesterday’s blowout—technically a “catastrophic failure”—was, but there was plenty of tread left on the tire, and I had just checked the tire pressure that morning, so I doubt much could have been done to prevent it. However, I will note that the tire that failed (exploded in my mind) was a Firestone tire. Apparently there has been quite a lot of controversy surrounding Firestone tires and their high than normal incidence of tread separation. Needless to say, I will not be purchasing Firestone tires in the future (this pair had come with the van).
Let’s hope that the Michelins purchased today will hold up better. Seeing as I’m cursed when it comes to tires, I paid the extra $25 per tire for the extra-super-duper-tire-fixing-or-replacement-warranty-certificate thing. The hope is that by having paid for the certificates I will have broken the curse. It’ll be worth it even if I never have to use them.
