It took much longer than it should have, but I finally figured out what kind of roof rack I want to build. I didn’t think I could design a rack big enough to hold 700 watts, but now I think I’ve got it figured out.
The camper top is approximately 45-46 in. wide, which means that a 47.125 in. solar panel oriented crosswise will hang of the sides a bit. It took a weeks and weeks of mulling it over, but I’ve finally made my peace with it. For some odd reason, that extra 1-2 inches really bothered me. It’s the toe hangover of van dwelling.
The current plan is to go with Option C. There’s enough space for seven panels, but I’m only going to install six for now. I plan to install a roof vent, so the vent will take up some of the space set aside for the seventh panel. Later on down the road if a seventh panel is needed then I’ll install it over the vent and just hope that the vent will still be somewhat functional.
You might have noticed that I plan to leave a little space between the panels. I have no idea why I feel the need to do this. It just feels like a good idea. If anyone has any insight about whether or not this is good idea, please do share.
