Wanda’s Indoor Shower

Are there any honest used car salesmen in the world? Rhetorical question.

A rainstorm thundered in to Southern CA a few days ago, revealing that Wanda’s skylight leaks like a sieve. A simple photo explains why.

Seriously, who does stuff like this!? Now, I’m not at all experienced in installing skylights or roof vents, but I know that this is all kinds of wrong. Apparently, some doofus cut away a large section of the original fiberglass roof to make this vent fit. Then they tried to cover the large gaps by stuffing them (poorly) with silicone. But what really makes this all wrong is that aftermarket vendors actually sell replacement skylights that fit the original hole! Enlarging the hole was completely unnecessary and was undoubtedly done only to save money. Sigh. I have a hunch that the guy who sold Wanda to Jef knew about this little indoor shower feature and that’s one of the reasons why he gave Jef such a good deal. Grrr.

Wanda now has a real skylight as Jef figures out what to do.

500 miles away, I actually got some work done on Gypsy. Shocker, I know. I finally got around to securing the bed platform so that it won’t fall off its stilts when I drive Gypsy around, and I also installed Gypsy’s largest piece of birch floor/under-floor storage.

Keeping with Gypsy’s trend of not being normal, instead of fancy latches or pulls, I opted for a much simpler design: leather string and washers. A spring on the underside keeps the extra leather strings from getting caught in the door. Since the doors and their pulls are part of the floor, I needed a low-profile solution that wouldn’t hurt to step on or catch Sake’s toes. I wish I could call this idea simple genius, but honestly, it evolved out of total laziness. Anything more complicated than drilling a single hole and installing a single screw just wasn’t going to happen.

As of right now, Gypsy’s floor is almost completely finished. Just a few more coats of polyurethane on some smaller pieces, five minutes of installation, and I’ll finally be able to call it done. Yay.
